Michael Leighton, MD
Board-Certified, Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon
Since I'm sure I'll be learning about you as we pursue our medical
relationship, it's only fair you know a little more about me: I'm a
Board Certified, Fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon.
I've practiced in the Palm Beach area since 1994 and, with my
wife, Andrea, and our three children, I stay pretty busy. As for
details about my education, interests, and how I approach
medicine, first, you should know that I love sports. I grew up in
Rockland County, New York and played about everything a kid
could play - basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball, golf, tennis, you
name it. At Duke University, I played on the baseball team and
graduated cum laude, then went on to study medicine at Rutgers
University, now called the University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
I stayed at UMDNJ-RWJUH to do my residency training in
orthopaedic surgery and, while there, completed rotations at
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Memorial Sloan Kettering
Hospital in New York City, and served as physician for the Rutgers
football team for a season.
In 1993, I moved to Chicago to pursue a one-year long Sports
Medicine Fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical
Center, where I was able to immerse myself in the various
techniques of knee, hip shoulder, and other sports injury surgery.
This intense training allowed me to focus on the mechanics of
joint movement and provided the foundation for my area of
expertise in sports injuries and joint replacement.
Since moving to Palm Beach, I've specialized in the treatment
of sports injuries, with a special concentration on arthroscopic
surgery and knee, hip and shoulder replacements for patients of
all ages.
Like all joint replacement specialists, I keep current with the
latest joint replacement materials and technologies, including a
new ceramic hip implant that has demonstrated superior wear
performance in the laboratory - meaning that it presents the
potential to last even longer than its metal/plastic implant
cousins, an important advantage for the growing number of young
people who are electing to have the surgery.
How I Like to Work
Whatever your injury or source of pain, my goal is to have you return, as quickly as possible, to what you love doing, with no or as little invasive surgery as possible. If you love to play golf and need to undergo a total knee, hip or shoulder replacement or have rotator cuff surgery, my goal is to have you back on the course hitting balls in the second or third month.
So, as you might expect, it’s important that we communicate. On my part, I’ll work to remain accessible and to explain all details about your treatment openly and understandably.
In addition, I want to hear what you have to say throughout the process — before, during and after surgery. Ask questions, express your concerns, and participate. Together, we can assure that you obtain the highest achievable results.
If you have questions, my office number and pertinent extensions are listed in office information. I’ll get back to you, or see that the right person gets back to you, as quickly as possible.
Other than that, I thank you for your time. I look forward to getting to know you and, working together, we can return you to a full, active lifestyle.
